This 16-day road-trip around Central America is every gappers dream come true and every wanderlusters essential travel fix. Between the blazing Mexican sun and the cool Guatemalan highlands lies a journey full of exotic surprises, unraveling mysteries of lost cultures, laid-back beach time, heart-stopping sceneries and some hair-raising thrills. Sashay off to a salsa class in Antigua, treat your taste buds to fiery hot enchiladas in Playa del Carmen and get lost in the Waterworld wonders of Belize-- you simply can’t get enough! Fasten your seatbelts, put your seats in upright positions and take off on an adventure of a lifetime!
Day 1 - Kickoff from Antigua
Arrive in Antigua at any time and head out on your own to explore this uber cool colonial city. Check into the hotel and work off your jet lag, the adventure begins tonight with a welcome meet with the group in the evening.
NOTE- Antigua's nearest airport is in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Don't get caught flying into the Caribbean island nation of Antigua; it's nowhere near the start of this tour!
Day 2 - Explore Antigua
Antigua is one of the best-restored Spanish colonial cities in the world and there are lots to see, so buckle up! Dig deep and learn more about this amazing Guatemalan city. Join the group for an orientation walk and then get lost in the rhythms of music with a salsa lesson. In the evening, celebrate the start of your adventure with a Big Night Out on the town!
Day 3 - Off to San Juan La Laguna
Hop aboard a boat and ride across Lake Atitlán to arrive in the laidback village of San Juan La Laguna. The Mayan handicrafts here are hot stuff as are the work of local artists. So go out and about the Lake’s Market and get your choice of souvenirs.
Day 4 - San Juan La Laguna to Panajachel
Return across the lake and enjoy your free time touring Panajachel or hit up the market and check out the local crafts.
Day 5 - Onward to Rio Dulce
Travel across Guatemala and arrive in Rio Dulce, a small town on Lake Izabal and take a tour through one of the important waterways of the Spanish crown during colonial times.
Day 6 - A day out in Rio Dulce
There are lots of activities to choose from and much to do around Lake Izabal. So take your pick and make the most of this. Opt to explore the coastal town of Livingston on a boat or go for a swim in a natural hot waterfall.
Day 7 - Head North to Flores
With a heavy influence of Mayan culture and Spanish language on Guatemala, you are sure to get them exotic feels here! Meet up with the descendants of Maya in Petén and get lost in their stories. Soak up all the goodness of Guatemala, this is our last stop in the country!
Day 8 - Cross the border into Belize and head to San Ignacio
Go for a guided tour in the Mayan ruins of Tikal and learn more about the fascinating cultures and history of a civilization lost. Later cross into Belize and gear up for an adventure by the sea.
Day 9 - Explore San Ignacio
Check out the seldom-visited Mayan ruins of Xunantunich or opt to go visit the Mayan burying caves of Actun Tunichil Muknal that still echoes stories of a civilization lost. There much to satiate the traveler in you, so go out and have fun!
Day 10 - Travel from San Ignacio to Caye Caulker
Hop aboard a bus and then take a water taxi out to the island paradise of Caye Caulker. Catch up with the relaxing vibe of Caye Caulker and get ready for some awesome beach fun, starting tomorrow!
Day 11 to Day 12 - Chill out and explore in Caye Caulker
Options abound when it comes to exciting things to see and do in Caye Caulker, and it would be a shame if you missed out on any of these must-have experiences. Opt to nurse sharks in Hol Chan Marine Reserve or choose to go diving or simply lounge about and relax, Belizean style! Make good use of this free time and travel to your heart’s content.
Day 13 - Head out to Mahahual
Cross the border into Mexico and check another country off your list on this trip. Travel north along the Caribbean and arrive in Costa Maya, Mexico and into the beachside town of Mahahual.
Day 14 - Fun day out in Mahahual
Go out and find yourself a private beach by the sugary white sands and scour the great nightlife options along the beachfront malecón (waterfront promenade) to plan up a euphoric night out.
Day 15 - Onward to Playa del Carmen
Head up the coast to Playa del Carmen and hardcore relax session on the beach or go out to the Mayan ruins of Tulúm. Enjoy a full day of free time to fill as you wish. So much beach, so little time, get out and explore!
Day 16 - Depart from Playa del Carmen or embark on another adventure
Every good thing comes to an end and so has this trip! You can depart at any time and hop on your homebound flight. But if you’re not ready to leave yet, you can simply choose from any of our trips or talk to your trip coordinator to help make arrangements for your journey ahead!

NOTE- Playa del Carmen is located just south of Cancún airport (45 min drive) so you can easily head directly there without returning to Cancún.

Accommodation - Simple hotels/hostels (14 nts, most multi-share), local homestay (1 nt).
Accommodation will be varied throughout your adventure. Some nights we use multi-share accommodation, on a single-sex basis (typically 4-6 people per room). We have specifically chosen unique accommodations to give local flavour to your trip. Couples: Please note that due to the variety of accommodation used in Central America, couples will be split into separate rooms when we use multi-share hostels. Pending availability, couples may be able to pay extra while on tour to have their own room in some destinations.
Meals Included - 1 dinner
Eating is a big part of traveling. Travelling with Go Discover Abroad you experience the vast array of wonderful food that is available out in the world. Generally meals are not included in the trip price when there is a choice of eating options, to give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. It also gives you more budgeting flexibility, though generally food is cheap. Our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company.
