You will need to carry extra money for personal expenses, add-on tours, eating out while traveling in South Africa. For basic personal expenses, a budget of 70-80 USD per week is more than sufficient. The amount might run higher if you choose to go on Safari trips. The cost of the safari trips varies between 300-600 USD depending on the safari option you choose.  If you’re planning on using credit/debit card in SA, it is advised to let your bank know about your travels beforehand so that they don’t suspicious of your account activity.

South African weather is characterized by moderate temperatures and a short staying transitional seasons of Autumn and Spring. For summer months (November-March), it is good to cool, breezy and lightweight clothes as temperatures easily reach 30-40 degree celsius. But at the same time, the evenings tend to be on the colder side, so lightweight jackets are also advised to carry.
During the winters, temperatures often dip to single digits, thus making long sleeved t-shirts, woolens, jackets and scarves essentials for packing. Don’t go overboard in packing for your trip and just pack the necessities, because traveling light will prove to be a blessing in the long run.

It is essential that you fly in on the scheduled project start dates and end dates to get the complimentary airport transfers, so book your flights accordingly. Many projects have different airports slated as pick-up points information about which will be included in your pre-departure kit. Your project coordinator will be picking you up, just keep your eyes peeled for a GoDiscoverAbroad Sign Card and a friendly face with a big smile on it!

South Africa’s diversity is reflected in the many languages spoken in the country as well, and English is one of the primary official languages of the country. English is the fourth most common first language in the country and it is understood in the Urban areas and the most common language in government and media too. Your coordinator will be fluent in English and you will also be inducted into the common local language (a few essential words and phrases really!) in your orientation sessions. So, what language barrier, really?

South Africa is a travelers hotspot and the country hosts millions of tourists every year. As with traveling anywhere you just need to use common sense. We believe that your safety depends on you to a large extent, hence you need to be a little cautious. Our Country coordinators are also there for 24/7 assistance, so you need not worry about safety.
