Are you planning that annual family holiday trip and can't decide where to go? How about exploring Costa Rica this time? This Latin American country hosts diverse flora and fauna with pristine coastlines and innumerable options of adventure sports. In a span of 9 days, travel across Costa Rica, spend some time on the beaches and explore the lush green jungles, introducing your kids to different species of birds and butterflies! Tickle you adventure cells and try out rappelling, rafting, swimming, horseback riding, and even surfing - basically, all that's there on the checklist.
Note: Family adventures are designed for groups traveling with children between the ages of 6 and 17 years. Your group must have a child in order to book a Family Tour, and anyone under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. We have planned this trip so that kids can enjoy some quality time with their parents during a holiday and everyone gets to learn something from the journey. You will be traveling as part of a group of families with other children. The itinerary has been designed with the needs of the whole family in mind.
Day 1 - Arrival in San José
Welcome to Costa Rica! You will have to arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport in San José. Our coordinator will be there at the airport to receive you. Travel to your hotel and take rest after a long flight. You have a free day to explore the city's beautiful parks, museums, and an ornate National Theatre. A Welcome Meeting will be organized for you, to give you an idea of the entire trip in details.
Day 2 - San José to La Fortuna
It's time for a road trip across the countryside of the Central Valley. It's a 3 hours journey to the base of the Arenal Volcano, and on the way, we shall stop to meet Doña Mara and learn the art of making tortillas, and eat them too! Once we reach our destination, you'll get enough time to relax in the hot springs that are heated by the volcano's lava. Take your kids to show them the beauty of nature that surrounds La Fortuna.
Day 3 - La Fortuna
This morning, you'll be going for stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking on Lake Arenal. It'll be an amazing experience for you and your family, as you'll all get to feel the adventure vibes together! You'll get the chance to spot wild birds like Great Blue Herons or even Howler Monkeys. You'll get to learn more about the Arenal Volcano while exploring the lake and try some local tropical fruits.
Post afternoon, you'll have free time to indulge in some more adventure and explore on your own.
Day 4 - La Fortuna to Monteverde
You'll fall in love with today's journey! Travel by bus to Laguna de Arenal and then take a boat through the stunning Costa Rican scenery up into the cloud forest. Soak yourself in the beauty and freshness of the surroundings and prepare for an adventurous night walk in the cloud forest. Your guide will be there to assist you and you can learn more about the habits of the area's nocturnal wildlife including mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, and amphibians, and keep your eyes and ears open on this slow-paced walk.
Day 5 - Monteverde
You have a free day to roam around Monteverde. Explore the cloud forest region, go for canopy zip lining and hanging bridge tours, visit the Monteverde Butterfly Garden to see and opt for a horse ride as well.
Day 6 - Monteverde to Manuel Antonio
It's time to travel to the beach town of Quepos, just outside Manuel Antonio National Park. You can either explore the park or just relax at the beachside and savor the authentic local food. The beautiful white-sand beaches and the warm turquoise water will surely make you drool! A trip to Quepos would be ideal for swimming, fishing, kayaking, boogie boarding, sailing or surfing - it’ll surely turn out to be the perfect finale to an exciting family adventure!
Day 7 - Manuel Antonio
It's your free day here - so try making good use of your time and explore as much as you can! In case you are in no mood for adventure, the best thing would be to relax on the beaches and binge on some local delicacies.
Day 8 - Manuel Antonio to San José
Chill on the beaches and later head back to the capital city of San José.
Day 9 - Depart from San José
Your fun filled family trip in Costa Rica comes to an end. You can choose to head back home, or continue your journey elsewhere. In case you need airport transfer, you can get in touch with the coordinator who'll arrange for it at an extra cost.

Eating is a big part of traveling. Travelling with Go Discover Abroad you experience the vast array of wonderful food that is available out in the world. Generally meals are not included in the trip price when there is a choice of eating options, to give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. It also gives you more budgeting flexibility, though generally food is cheap. Our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company. There is no obligation to do this though. Your CEO will be able to suggest favourite restaurants during your trip. The above information applies to Go Discover Abroad group trips. Please refer to the meals included and budget information for included meals and meal budgets.
