What comes to your mind when you hear 'India'? It may be the wrinkled faces of the countrymen or the colors that you've probably seen in photographs. Is it the beauty of the festivities or maybe it's the cuisine that you've always wanted to try, or the Himalayas and the Ganges that has knocked your dreams for a hundred times. Surely, you've wished to visit India whenever you saw a photograph or read about it - so why wait longer? If you have time in your hands and planning to take a gap year and tour across the borders, then respond to the calls from the land of mysticism - India!
The 'Discover India' Tour aims to provide you the best experiences in the Northern part of the country, over a span of 3 weeks. It has been designed in a way that you can get a keen insight into the lifestyle, culture, heritage & history, architecture as well as the flora & fauna that Northern India beholds. Gap year students, backpackers and solo travelers should definitely indulge in this!
Day 1 - Welcome to New Delhi
Your journey begins today, as soon as you land at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. One of our team members will be there to receive you at the airport, who'll arrange for your safe and comfortable transfer to the accommodation. This would be a free day when you can get to know your fellow travelers - also, take your time to sink in and absorb the Indian radiance. Prepare yourself for the amazing journey that lies ahead!
Day 2 - Orientation and Delhi Sightseeing
Before the journey begins, our coordinators will provide the group with a brief Orientation Session, telling you about what all you'll do and explore during the upcoming 21 days, as well as the dos and don'ts, safety tips etc. Later, you'll head out for exploring some of the famous monuments in the city including the Qutub Minar, India Gate, Humayun’s Tomb and the Lotus Temple. You'll get to have your lunch at a local restaurant, and there will be a traditional dinner cum welcome party for you, in the evening.
Day 3 to Day 7 - Volunteering at the underprivileged children in New Delhi
What can be more pleasurable than serving those in need? We shall give you the opportunity to feel the warmth by being around these lovely little ones, who have fallen prey to adverse circumstances, yet dream to live a better life. All you need to do is shower them with unconditional love, teach them valuable life lessons and play with them endlessly! This week will pass by the wink of an eye, and rest assured, it's gonna be an important part of your trip.
Your evenings will be free for exploring the local markets and other areas of interest. On day 6, we shall take you to see the Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple, where you can also see the mesmerizing Laser Water Show.
Day 8 - Free Day, Overnight Travel to Palampur
After an intense week, you surely deserve some rest and time to unwind. Take your time, pack your stuff, pick up the knick-knacks you want and get ready to hit the Himalayas! We will drop you at the Bus Terminus in Delhi and you can board an air-conditioned bus to Palampur, Himachal Pradesh.
Day 9 - Arrival in Palampur, Orientation
After an overnight bus journey, you'll reach the pristine town of Palampur, also known as 'The Tea Capital of North India'. Have your cup of morning brew and get ready for the Orientation Session by our local coordinators. While gazing at the beautiful scenery around, get familiarized at the accommodation and the surrounding area. Later, you can take a tour of the local markets, spot the ATM in case you need cash, and try some yummy momos!
Day 10 to Day 14 - Volunteering in Palampur
Another week of being with the kids at the Child Care Center! Sounds exciting, isn't it? Your main tasks would involve creating a vibrant learning environment for the kids. Use your creative cells and try to bring out the best in you! Teamwork and coordination would be of much help during this phase, and you'll also get to cuddle the cuties while playing with them. In case you are keen on doing something more, you can help the staff in administrative work as well.
Day 15 - Trekking in the Himalayas
Wow! Finally, you get to trek and explore the highest mountain range in the world! The Himalayas are mesmerizing and mysterious at the same time, and the Triund Trek will unfold nature's best to you. This 9km long trek will reveal the beauty of the mountains, make you feel the chills and add some beautiful memories. Stay at the camps at night and wake up to see the most colorful sunrise!
Day 16 - Head towards Dharamshala/ Mcleodganj
Climb down to the Tibetan town of Mcleodganj and take some rest at the accommodation. Later, head out to explore the Dalai Lama Monastery and the local markets, to pick up some souvenirs.You can have dinner at one of the many rooftop cafes in Mcleod.
Day 17 - Travel to Amritsar, Visit the Golden Temple
After breakfast bid goodbye to Mcleodganj and start your journey towards the Holy City of Amritsar. The Golden Temple attracts visitors from all over the world, and undoubtedly, it's one of the most picturesque religious monuments in the country. You can also visit the Jallianwala Bagh and walk down the local markets in Amritsar.
Day 18 - Train from Amritsar to New Delhi, and later, Agra
It's time to head back to the capital city, and you can enjoy a ride in the Indian Railways, experiencing the bliss that train journeys in India have to offer. Later that day, you'll head towards the city of love, Agra. You must be tired by the end of the day, so it's better to end the day at the accommodation - get some good sleep!
Day 19 - Taj Mahal Tour, followed by Jaipur journey
You must have waited for this since the time you landed in the country! Finally, this is your chance of witnessing the gorgeous monument that was built by Emperor Shah Jahan for the love of this life, Mumtaz. Only when you see this, will you know why it is considered as one of the Seven Wonders Of The World.
After you are done absorbing the beauty, we'll arrange for your transfer to the royal city of Jaipur, also known as 'The Pink City'.
Day 20 - Jaipur Sightseeing
After breakfast, your first stop would be the City Palace. We'll also take a photo stop at Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds). In the evening there would be a cultural show, where you can enjoy folk dance and famous Rajasthani puppet show followed by traditional dinner.
Day 21 - Visit the Amer Fort and head towards Delhi
One of the most gorgeous Rajput Forts, Amer will sweep you off your feet! Located on a hilltop, on the outskirts of Jaipur, Amer Fort is an example of brilliant architecture and grandeur.
Later in the afternoon, you will start your journey towards Delhi. Upon arrival in Delhi, check in at the accommodation arranged for you. This would be your last evening, so you can do some last minute shopping, pick up postcards and other things that you would love take back home and make sure you have ticked off everything from your checklist.
Day 22 - Take a flight back home
The minimum age to take part in this tour is 16 years.
A Criminal Background Check Report will be necessary for this project.
Participant must be enthusiastic about traveling and keen to make a social change.
You must be a responsible traveler and respect the culture of the host country.
Accommodation in New Delhi
In New Delhi during your first phase of the trip, you'll be accommodated at the volunteer house in South Delhi area. The house is located in a residential area with is safe and close to all popular tourist destinations. Rooms will be provided on the same-gender sharing basis. All basic amenities (geyser, air conditioner, wifi etc) will be available at the accommodation. The childcare project location will be closer to your accommodation and take around 10-30 minutes to reach. Delicious Indian food will be served to you, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Accommodation in Palampur
You’ll fall in love with your accommodation in this picturesque town. The volunteer house where you’ll be staying has a huge open space in front, and you can see the snow capped peaks from every corner of the house. Rooms will be provided on the same-gender sharing basis, and all basic amenities will be available. However, don’t expect good internet facilities - try to disconnect as much as possible with the outer world. Hot and healthy meals will be provided to you at the accommodation itself.

We felt welcome and safe from the first minute and everyone was very helpful and available at all the time. I thoroughly enjoyed the placement. The kids were just amazing.
I enjoyed my experience at the center. It has opened my eyes to what real poverty looks like. The children were such a gift. They taught me so much about resilience and what you can do with a few things. The children were joyful and such a pleasure to be around.

I love my program placement, the children are so nice, staff at the placement is very friendly. It was bit shocking to witness kids living in such conditions but it was a meaningful experience.
I liked staying in the volunteer houses, it made it easy to get to know everyone, interacting with volunteers from different parts of the world is fun.
