General Questions

All travelers and volunteers will need a valid Visa for entering the country. A 30-day Tourist Visa can be obtained on arrival. The fee is usually US$25 and you can extend your visa when you are in Cambodia. Being a backpackers' hub, Cambodia is a safe country to travel and explore. You'll meet several other solo travelers during your journey. The accommodation will be provided at a safe location, and you'll have 24/7 assistance from our coordinator. You need to buy your Medical and Travel Insurance before setting out for your trip. GDA also provides the insurance facilities, at an additional cost.

It's good if you can consult your physician and take the vaccinations as instructed. We would suggest you to take the Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Tetanus vaccines. If you are traveling from a country with a risk of Yellow Fever Virus (YFV) transmission, you are required to show proof of Yellow Fever vaccination. You must also check with your doctor for any other medicines that you might require.

There's something or the happening throughout the year, and each festival in the country has its own charm. The main festivals are Khmer New Year (mid-April), Pchum Ben (September), Angkor Festival (November or December), King Sihanouk's Birthday Celebration (October 31), Water festival (October or November) etc. Check your dates and our coordinator will guide you about the festivals you can be a part of.

You'll need money for your personal expenses, additional tour costs, weekend meals (at times, if you are heading out for lunch or dinner) etc. It'll be sufficient if you keep $40 - $50 for each day.

Cambodia, like every other Southeast Asian country, has a tropical climate. The weather is usually hot and humid. Warm to hot months extends from May to November when you'll be needing comfortable and light clothing. Carry shirts, t-shirts, and jeans as it would be the best to wear! The monsoon sets in the month of December, lowering the temperature to nearly 22 degrees to 25 degrees Centigrade. You can carry an umbrella or raincoat if you wish to.  It's wiser to travel light and pack only the essentials. Don't make your luggage too heavy, as you'll get almost everything in Cambodia! 

Khmer is the official language of Cambodia and it's spoken by the majority of the natives. However, a huge population speaks French or Mandarin, as well as in English. If you move further towards the Eastern part of the country, you'll find people in the rural areas speaking Vietnamese. Your coordinator will be well versed in English, so you need not worry about language barrier!
