Here's Why You Should Travel Solo At Least For Once In A Lifetime!

"As you move outside of your comfort zone, what was once the unknown and frightening becomes your new normal." -- Robin S. Sharma, Author of 'The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari'.

Before I go into the reasons to convince you for a solo trip, let me tell you that it'll push you out of your comfort zone in a way like no other. About 3 years back, when I decided to just pack my bags and set out for an adventure - I didn't know what was waiting for me ahead! It was when I found myself in a different land, amidst unknown people, following their way of life yet enjoying myself to the fullest - I came to know of the magic of traveling alone!

To be honest, language barriers, the thoughts of getting lost, or falling ill or maybe missing a flight can initially seem to be terrifying - however, it soon becomes apparent that you can be capable of far more than you ever imagined. Exploring a new destination alone will also let you explore your inner self. Having to come up with solutions entirely on your own will prompt you to use initiative and heighten your perceptions. You’ll be forced to just “build a bridge and get over it” and, when everything works out, you’ll emerge as a much stronger human being.

If you're someone who's skeptic and not-so-confident yet, then here are some reasons to convince you for a solo trip, at least for once in a lifetime!

You'll be the master of your own plans!

To put it in the words of Henry David Thoreau, “The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready.”

And we all know how true these words are! Most of the time, if there's a family vacation or a plan with friends, we usually tend to wait until everyone has their leaves sanctioned and the time of traveling is convenient for all. Also, when we are traveling with others, we have to consider everyone's tastes and preferences! For example, when I was planning a trip to Thailand with my friends, all of them wanted to head off to the beaches, while I was more eager to explore the Northern hilly areas of Thailand, and spend some days in the quaint villages surrounding Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai. Well, in such cases, the majority wins!

But when I traveled solo to Thailand, I did all that I wanted to! I met the tribal people living in the villages, hiked through the jungles, volunteered at an elephant camp and attended Thai cooking classes! Thus, you see, when you plan to travel alone, you'll be the master of your own plans and you can fix the itinerary as you wish to!

There will be no need to compromise with anyone on which activities to try or places to visit, and as a result, you will be able to live in the moment and visit anything that takes your fancy. Likewise, you won't be forced to participate in anything that doesn't interest you, and you can stick to your budget exactly how you like.

You'll get to meet a lot of interesting people & make a bunch of new friends!

All these years, you've been friends with people who are similar to you - people from school/college or from your society, people you've known for your life and can be easily trusted, people from your workplace or people who are friends of friends! But when you travel solo, you'll feel the magic of being friends with those who are immensely different from you. Probably they are of a different color, they follow a different religion, speak a different language, have diverse food habits, so on and so forth! Yet, you'll become friends with them, and find that in spite of all the differences, there are things in common!

You might just meet someone at a restaurant and find out that you both love reading books of the same author. Or you may bump into someone who has the same interests as that of yours, and you both can plan a day out together! Traveling solo will teach you to make friends out of strangers and help you to learn the fact that the world still has amazing people, who can be trusted for good.

You might start off as a solo traveler, but by the time you end your journey, you'll surely have a bunch of new friends and some incredible memories with them!

As Rumi has mentioned, “Travel brings power and love back into your life.”

While traveling with others, we mostly tend to go with the flow as someone else takes up all the tasks of managing the tickets & accommodation, itinerary and daily schedules, etc. But on a solo trip, we are bound to take responsibility for everything! From choosing the destination to booking everything, from preparing an itinerary to working out the budget - there's plenty of tasks surrounding your solo endeavor. Go slow, think before your plan, pause at times if you feel like, and trust your gut - this journey will make you fall in love with yourself.

Your journey will also get you closer to your partner, friends & family!

Don't be surprised, 'coz this is actually going to happen. The famous adage “absence makes the heart grow fonder” perhaps holds immense truth for those traveling solo, and I've experienced this myself. While away, it’s inevitable that you’ll miss your loved ones, your family and friends, but think of it as an opportunity to reflect on their good points. I remember the time when I was traveling alone, I didn't get to call home on a daily basis, but when I returned back and shared my experiences with my mom, she was thrilled and proud of me!

If you’re used to traveling with your partner, a trip by yourself will likely just reinforce your feelings towards them, and you’ll appreciate them, even more, when you return home. Going on a solo trip can actually improve your relationship, as you'll realize the importance of that person in your life, and also figure out where exactly you both stand in each other's lives. Provided that both people are happy with the idea of living without the other for a while, the relationship can actually benefit from one person traveling alone.
